Navigating Acne After 40

Posted by Katelyn Rousselle on

If you’re over 40 and dealing with the frustrating reality of acne, you’re not alone. Many women find themselves caught off guard by breakouts in their 40s and beyond, especially when they’re seeking solutions for mood swings and hormonal imbalances.

One common recommendation you might hear from your doctor is DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone).

While it’s often prescribed with good intentions, it can sometimes lead to unexpected side effects, including worsening acne. So, let’s break this down a bit. DHEA is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, and it plays a role in the production of other hormones, including estrogen and testosterone.

For some women, supplementing with DHEA can help improve mood and energy levels. However, the downside is that for some, it can also increase oil production in the skin, leading to breakouts that leave us frustrated. If you’ve found that your acne has worsened since starting DHEA, know that you’re not alone in this struggle. It’s a common issue that can leave you wondering how a solution for one problem ended up creating another.

Remember, your skin is often a reflection of your internal health, and hormonal fluctuations can have a significant impact. So, what can you do? First, it’s essential to have open conversations with your healthcare provider about your experiences. Don’t hesitate to express your concerns and discuss alternative options. Sometimes, lifestyle changes and natural remedies can be just as effective in managing mood and hormonal issues without the unwanted side effects.

Look for gentle skincare routines that manage acne without aggravating it further. Our favourite product to help tackle breaouts, and pigmentation from acne is called Clear Up - it's an easy addition to your routine, no matter your age, or where you live.

Acne can be tough at any age, but it doesn’t define your beauty or worth.

And as always, I’m here to support you on this journey. Feel free to share your experiences or ask any questions.
